Background of the study
The Yoruba language is marked by a rich tapestry of dialects, each reflecting distinct historical, geographical, and cultural influences. Translation plays a pivotal role in bridging these dialectal differences, facilitating communication and mutual understanding among diverse Yoruba-speaking communities. This study examines how translation practices mediate the variations in vocabulary, syntax, and idiomatic expressions that occur across Yoruba dialects (Adeleke, 2023). Effective translation not only promotes linguistic unity but also supports the preservation of cultural diversity within the broader Yoruba identity. However, challenges such as divergent dialectal norms, regional lexical preferences, and contextual variations complicate the translation process (Oluwole, 2024). Translators are tasked with balancing fidelity to source texts with the need for comprehensibility among speakers of different dialects. This research explores various translation methodologies employed in Yoruba literature, media, and educational materials, assessing their effectiveness in reconciling dialectal differences. By analyzing case studies, conducting interviews with language experts, and reviewing translation policies, the study aims to provide insights into how translation can be optimized to foster unity without sacrificing linguistic richness (Adeleke, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of translation in uniting diverse Yoruba dialects, significant challenges persist. Variations in dialectal expressions often result in translations that either oversimplify or misrepresent the nuances of regional speech (Oluwole, 2024). This discord can lead to miscommunication and even cultural dilution when the distinct identities of each dialect are not adequately preserved. The lack of standardized guidelines for handling dialectal differences further complicates the process (Adeleke, 2023). This study seeks to identify these challenges and explore how translation strategies can be refined to bridge dialectal gaps effectively, ensuring that communication remains both accurate and culturally respectful.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine translation practices that address dialectal differences in Yoruba.
  2. To identify the challenges faced in translating across dialects.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving translation accuracy and cultural fidelity.

Research questions:

  1. How do current translation practices address dialectal differences in Yoruba?
  2. What challenges are encountered in translating diverse Yoruba dialects?
  3. What strategies can enhance the bridging of dialectal variations?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of translation in unifying Yoruba dialects, ensuring effective communication and cultural preservation. The insights gained will benefit translators, educators, and language policymakers by identifying best practices and areas for improvement. A refined translation approach will contribute to enhanced mutual understanding among Yoruba speakers and support the integrity of the language (Adeleke, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining translation practices focused on bridging dialectal differences within the Yoruba language. It does not extend to other languages or broader linguistic studies.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translation: The process of converting text from one linguistic form to another.
  • Dialectal differences: Variations in language usage across different regions or communities.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
